Job Search Resources

So you’re looking for a job. So is everyone else. Unfortunately, you’re competing with hundreds, possibly thousands, of people for the same job. How can you outwit them all to land the job you want?

Get with the times. If you’re still limiting your job search to Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, or similar job boards, you’re already giving your competition an advantage.

  • Research job boards that are specific to your industry or interests, such as GreatGreenCareers.com for those into sustainability.
  • Consider LinkUp.com, which aggregates job postings only from employers’ websites.
  • Don’t forget about industry associations; even if you’re not a member, you can search job postings. For example, the Society of Human Resource Management currently lists over 400 HR jobs available throughout the United States.

Get resourceful. If you’re sick of your boring, depressing workplace, look for companies that have won “Best Places to Work” type of awards in your area, and see if any are hiring. If you’re looking for an exciting, entrepreneurial environment, browse the Inc. 5,000 for a list of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States.

Get inside the minds of hiring managers and recruiters. It never hurts to know what the other side is thinking. Look for blogs that can provide some helpful insight, such as Good to Know by Martin Burns, recruiting manager at ZoomInfo, Inc. or Ask the Headhunter by Nick Corcodilos, a professional recruiter.

Get creative. Given how many people you’re competing against, use any opportunity you can to stand out (in a good way—submitting the worst resume ever doesn’t count). If you’re into social media, use social media to get a hiring manager’s attention. If you’re a programmer, include some code that will make your resume and cover letter memorable. If you’re in sales, sell yourself convincingly by highlighting the benefits and bottom-line value you offer. In short, demonstrate you can do the job by the way you’re trying to get the job.

Get smart about your job search. Trust your instincts, and avoid scams. You should never have to pay to look for a job.

Good luck!
